29 He answered, “This kind cannot be driven out except by prayer [and by fasting].”[a]
30 Jesus Predicts His Passion a Second Time.[b] They proceeded from there and began to journey through Galilee, but Jesus did not want anyone to know about it 31 because he was teaching his disciples. He told them, “The Son of Man[c] will be handed over into the power of men. They will kill him, and three days after being killed he will rise.”

- Mark 9:29 Other ancient manuscripts omit: “and by fasting.”
- Mark 9:30 Mark very effectively alternates the glorious and suffering aspects of the Messiah, following up the most spectacular exorcism in the Gospel with Jesus’ second prediction of his Passion. He also implies that the initiative for the death of the Servant (see Isa 53) belongs to God.
